Who is Hegeman String Band?

Hegeman String Band is a long-standing South Philadelphia tradition, dedicated to creating innovative New Year’s Day performances and supporting our community year-round. We bring together musicians, families, volunteers, and fans who share a love for music, creativity, and the Mummers spirit.

Do I need to know how to play an instrument to join?

Not necessarily! We welcome both musicians and social members.

• Musicians should have basic experience with a band instrument (banjo, saxophone, accordion, etc.).

• Social members support the band through events, fundraising, and community activities — no musical experience required.

What instruments are used in a string band?

Common instruments include: banjo, saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), accordion, bass fiddle, glockenspiel, and various percussion instruments.

Do you offer lessons for beginners?

Yes! Many of our members are happy to help new players learn. We also connect beginners with instrument instructors and practice opportunities.

How often does the band practice?

Rehearsals are typically held weekly, with additional practices scheduled as we get closer to New Year’s Day or special events. Members are encouraged to attend regularly to stay performance-ready.

What does a social member do?

How much does it cost to join?

What events does Hegeman participate in?

Besides the Mummers Parade, we perform at community events, private parties, fundraisers, concerts, benefit events, and local parades. We’re active year-round!

Do I need to buy my own costume?

No. The band designs and provides all New Year’s Day costumes. Members may help with assembling or decorating costumes as part of parade prep.

What is the time commitment for musicians?

Musicians should plan for weekly practices, occasional weekend events, and the full New Year’s week schedule (rehearsals, walkthroughs, and parade day).
